BEFORE USING IT
What should I do first?
- Learn the normal aircraft controls and RTH behavior before focusing on thermal features.
- Confirm the visual and thermal cameras are functioning, storage is ready, batteries are healthy and the app shows no unresolved warnings.
- Decide whether you need qualitative 'hot/cold pattern' imagery or a workflow that requires radiometric temperature data and analysis.
FIRST USE
How do I start without overwhelming myself?
- Practice on safe, familiar targets so you can compare thermal and visible images.
- Use simple scenes first and observe how sun, reflections, wind, moisture and surface material can change what you see.
- Capture matching visual context whenever practical; thermal imagery without context can be easy to misread.
CONTROLS & SETTINGS
What actually matters at the beginning?
- Palette choice changes how the image looks, not the underlying physics.
- Apparent temperature can be affected by emissivity, reflected temperature, distance and environment.
- Use measurement tools as aids, not as a diagnosis by themselves.
CRASH / DAMAGE PREVENTION
What beginner mistakes should I avoid?
- Do not claim a roof leak, electrical fault, medical condition or other technical conclusion from a colorful thermal image alone.
- Avoid interpreting sun-heated surfaces as defects without understanding the conditions.
- Do not promise exact temperatures unless your specific workflow, camera mode and methodology support that use.
PHOTOS, VIDEO & DATA
Keep the capture side simple at first.
- Use consistent palettes and ranges when comparing similar targets.
- Keep visible and thermal framing organized so the client can understand where each image came from.
- For reports, note environmental conditions and limitations instead of presenting thermal imagery as certainty.
USEFUL ACCESSORIES
What is actually worth considering?
- Extra batteries
- Appropriate case/field charging
- Workflow/reporting software if your service needs it
- Reference tools/training relevant to your specialty
REALISTIC USES
What can I do with it?
- Thermal pattern documentation
- Public-safety situational awareness where authorized/trained
- Solar/roof/building inspection support when paired with proper methodology
- Search/inspection tasks where temperature contrast is useful
What is it not suited for?
- Automatic diagnosis without qualified interpretation
- Survey-grade mapping claims by default
- Operations where thermal contrast is poor or environmental conditions invalidate the result
COMMON BEGINNER PROBLEMS
Check these before deciding the gear is broken.
- Image looks flat: temperature span/palette/environment may be the issue.
- Hot spot seems to move/disappear: reflections and changing sun angle can fool beginners.
- Temperature reading seems wrong: review emissivity, distance, reflected energy and whether the target is suitable for measurement.
