RTK for Drones

RTK is a positioning workflow, not a magic 'survey accuracy' switch. Learn what correction source and deliverable you actually need.

PRACTICAL OWNER / BUYER GUIDE

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO?

BEFORE USING IT

What should I do first?

  • Identify the aircraft/module, correction source and mapping software in your workflow.
  • Confirm whether you are using an NTRIP/network correction service, a local base station, or another supported correction method.
  • Verify coordinate/reference settings in the tools you use; mixing datums/coordinate systems can ruin an otherwise good capture.

FIRST USE

How do I start without overwhelming myself?

  • Practice on a small site where accuracy can be checked independently.
  • Watch RTK status during the mission rather than assuming it stayed fixed.
  • Keep raw project records and note what correction method was used.

CONTROLS & SETTINGS

What actually matters at the beginning?

  • RTK improves positioning when the system has a valid correction solution.
  • RTK does not by itself make you a licensed surveyor or guarantee every output is survey-grade.
  • Absolute accuracy, relative accuracy, checkpoints/GCPs and legal survey requirements are separate ideas.

CRASH / DAMAGE PREVENTION

What beginner mistakes should I avoid?

  • Do not market 'survey-grade' only because the drone has RTK.
  • Do not ignore coordinate systems or correction-source quality.
  • Do not skip independent quality checks when the deliverable depends on accuracy.

PHOTOS, VIDEO & DATA

Keep the capture side simple at first.

USEFUL ACCESSORIES

What is actually worth considering?

  • Compatible RTK module if not built in
  • Correction source/service or compatible base station
  • Mapping/photogrammetry software
  • Checkpoints/GCP equipment when your methodology calls for them

REALISTIC USES

What can I do with it?

  • Repeatable mapping workflows
  • Construction documentation
  • Photogrammetry where improved positional consistency is useful

What is it not suited for?

  • Replacing a qualified surveyor where law/client scope requires one
  • Fixing bad imagery or poor flight planning
  • Guaranteeing accuracy without validation
